SAPEUSES & ENTREPRENEURS
Republic of Congo
In Congo, The Sapeuses are turning ideas of gender on their head, donning power suits and high-fashion accessories to bring joy and wonder to their communities. National Geographic Explorer and Photographer, Yagazie Emezi, meets a leading Sapeuse and her crew, learns about the history of the sapeur culture in Congo and discovers what drives these women, who encounter both praise and condemnation among their peers.
This was part of a global campaign that took us from the Swiss Alps to South Africa to Germany to Ghana, telling ‘Moving Stories’ from around the world.
